1. Diaspora: Hawke's Bay's first Indian woman police officer
The New Zealand Herald has featured Ramandeep Kaur Sandhu, Hawke's Bay's first Indian woman police officer. The 28-year old had moved to Hawke's Bay in 2012, and she speaks Punjabi, Hindi, and English (NZ Herald).
She joined the police after a two-year-long study and recruitment process (Voxy).
2. Three Indian-origin Brothers convicted of Murder
Three Indian-origin brothers and a person of Caribbean descent have been convicted of murder in Acton in West London (UK) on September 24, 2019 (The Times of India). They stabbed a 22-year-old man in connection with an ongoing dispute (NDTV).
3. 38 Killed in Myanmar, Chinese Factories Set on Fire
Thirty-eight people were killed in Myanmar, with most casualties reported from the industrial city of Yangon. The Chinese Embassy stated that several Chinese-funded factories were smashed and set ablaze in Yangon's industrial zone. The embassy said that Chinese nationals were also injured (CNN).
Tattoo is the latest defiance
Myanmar citizens are also expressing their dissent via tattoos, with drawings of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi', the three-finger salute, or the slogans "Freedom from Fear" or "Spring Revolution" being popular ones (NDTV).
4. Five Heads of State to Attend Bangladesh's Golden Jubilee
Five heads of state/government from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and the Maldives will attend the golden jubilee of Bangladeshi independence. All visiting leaders will also visit the National Memorial in Savar to pay homage to martyrs.
Those attending include Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed, Sri Lankan premier Mahinda Rajapaksa, Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Bhutanese premier Lotay Tshering (The Independent).
5. Aamir Khan's Chinese fans celebrate in Beijing
Chinese fans of Indian film star Aamir Khan celebrated his 56th birthday at the Indian Embassy in Beijing. The Bollywood actor has a strong following in China, where Three Idiots, Dangal, and Secret Super Star are popular. He is also popular on the Chinese social media platform Sina Weibo (Free Press Journal).
